What exactly is a pad H-spring and why does it matter?

A pad H-spring is a small stamped spring clip that sits between the backing plates of disc brake pads. It provides preload, keeps the pads centered in the caliper, and prevents rattling. Without the spring the pads can move, rub, or wear unevenly, and brakes may be noisy or feel inconsistent.

Will these springs fit non-SRAM brake pads?

They’re designed to OEM SRAM HRD specifications and will fit most SRAM-backed pads that use an H-style spring. Compatibility with non-SRAM pads depends on pad backing plate shape and spacing; visually compare your current spring before installing non-OEM parts.

How many springs do I need per caliper?

Most SRAM pad sets use a single H-spring per pad pair (one spring between the inner and outer backing plates). This 20-piece pack covers multiple pad sets—enough for servicing many bikes or several pad replacements.

Are these springs corrosion-resistant for wet riding?

Yes. The springs are made from high-tensile spring steel with a corrosion-resistant coating (red finish) to withstand wet and muddy conditions typical of mountain biking. Still, inspect springs during service and replace if you see pitting or loss of tension.

Any installation tips or common pitfalls?

Use a small needle-nose plier to position the H-spring squarely between backing plates and avoid over-stretching. Ensure the spring isn't inverted and that pads slide freely in the caliper. If you’re unsure, keep one wheel off the ground and squeeze the brake to check pad movement before riding.

Can I reuse these springs during multiple pad changes?

Yes, H-springs are reusable provided they retain spring tension and show no corrosion or deformation. Replace springs if they’ve lost tension, are bent, or show significant surface damage to keep pad alignment optimal.
