Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SRAM PG-1030 compatible with Shimano freehub bodies?
Yes. The PG-1030 uses the common HG spline and fits standard Shimano/SRAM 10-speed freehub bodies. It mounts like any HG-style cassette; no special adapters are required.
Can I use this cassette with my 11-speed shifter or chain?
No. The PG-1030 is a 10-speed cassette and must be used with a 10-speed chain and 10-speed shifters/derailleur. Mixing 11-speed components will result in poor shifting and drivetrain wear.
Which cassette range should I choose for hilly riding?
For steep or long climbs we recommend the 11-36T option for its lower gears and easier climbing. The 11-32T is a good compromise for mixed terrain, while the 11-28T suits flatter, faster riding and tighter cadence steps.
How durable is the nickel-chrome finish?
The nickel-chrome plating increases surface hardness and resists corrosion, extending cog life in wet or gritty conditions. As with any cassette, life expectancy depends on maintenance, chain wear and riding conditions.
Do I need a special chain or lockring to install the PG-1030?
Use a standard 10-speed chain rated for road or MTB use depending on your application. The cassette installs onto an HG-style freehub with a standard lockring. If your bike originally shipped with an 8/9/10 speed cog assembly you may already have the correct lockring and spacer configuration.
Is the PG-1030 suitable for cyclocross and mixed-surface riding?
Yes. Its robust steel cogs, aluminum spider and PowerGlide II profiling make it resilient and quick-shifting in variable conditions—ideal for cyclocross, gravel-adjacent road riding and commuter use.
Buying Guide
When choosing a 10-speed cassette, match the cassette range to your derailleur's capacity and the type of riding you do. Consider the largest cog your derailleur can handle and ensure your chain length accommodates the range; wider ranges like 11-36T need more derailleur capacity. Also pair the PG-1030 with a new or low-wear 10-speed chain and check that your wheel uses an HG-style freehub spline. If you're upgrading from an older or different-speed drivetrain, review shifter and derailleur compatibility first to avoid mixed-speed issues.
