Frequently Asked Questions
What weights can I expect for different lengths?
Evo lists 161g for the 110mm version. Shorter lengths (70mm–100mm) will be lighter — typically decreasing by a few grams per 10mm reduction. If absolute grams matter, choose the shortest length that suits your handling needs.
What torque should I use for the stem bolts?
Recommended clamping torque typically sits around 5–8 Nm for steerer clamp bolts and 5–6 Nm for the faceplate on alloy handlebars. If fitting carbon bars, follow the bar manufacturer's lower torque spec (often 4–5 Nm) and use carbon assembly paste. Always tighten incrementally and use a torque wrench.
Can I use this stem with a 31.8mm handlebar?
Not directly. The E-Tec is a 25.4mm clamp stem. If you want to use 31.8mm bars you must fit a precision shim adapter designed for stem-to-bar conversion. For the most secure fit, we usually recommend using a stem that matches the bar clamp diameter.
Is the E-Tec suitable for enduro or aggressive riding?
The 3D-forged alloy construction gives the E-Tec good stiffness and durability for trail and many aggressive riding styles, but for high-impact enduro or gravity use you may prefer a longer-throw, gravity-specific stem with proven testing for those stresses. The E-Tec is best categorized as a lightweight trail XC-to-all-mountain option.
Can I install this stem on a tapered steerer?
This stem clamps a straight 1-1/8" steerer. If your fork is tapered (1 1/8" to 1.5"), you can still use this stem provided your headset and top-cap are set up to present a 1-1/8" section for the stem to clamp. Many modern tapered setups use a shim or a specific crown/top-cap spacer to provide that flat 1-1/8" clamping surface.
Buying Guide
Choosing a stem is about balancing reach, control and comfort. Shorter stems (70–90mm) deliver quicker handling and are popular on tight, technical trails; longer stems (100–110mm) provide a more stretched position suited to faster climbs and steady high-speed tracking. Angle options (±7° and ±17°) let you raise or lower the handlebar without changing spacers or headset height. Also match clamp diameter first — the E-Tec uses a 25.4mm clamp, a common size on older and many budget mountain bars. If your bars are 31.8mm, plan for an adapter or choose a 31.8mm stem. Finally, consider weight versus durability — the E-Tec’s forged alloy offers a great middle ground for riders who want performance without premium carbon cost.
