Frequently Asked Questions
Are these calipers compatible with carbon rims?
Yes, but they ship with SRAM's standard alloy rim compound. For carbon rims you should fit SRAM carbon-specific brake pads (sold separately) to ensure proper heat management and braking performance on carbon braking surfaces.
How do I measure brake reach to make sure they fit my frame?
Measure from the center of the caliper mounting bolt to the braking surface on the rim. The SRAM Force calipers provide 39–51mm of reach, so your frame or fork must require a reach within that range for correct fit and pad clearance.
Do these calipers come with pads installed?
Yes — the set includes SRAM cartridge pad holders with SRAM pad compound pre-installed for alloy rims. The cartridge system makes swapping pads quick and keeps the pad bodies clean during servicing.
What tools are needed for installation and pad changes?
Basic bike tools are sufficient: a 5mm hex or appropriate wrench for mounting, a screwdriver or hex for pad retention depending on SRAM's cartridge hardware, and cable-adjusting tools to set pad clearance and centering. Pad swaps typically require minimal tools thanks to the cartridge design.
Can I use these with non-SRAM brake levers?
These are standard road caliper brakes and will work with most drop-bar road brake levers that use conventional cable pull. Confirm lever/cable pull compatibility if using non-standard or older lever systems.
How do these compare to modern disc brakes?
Rim calipers like the SRAM Force are lighter and simpler to maintain than disc systems and can provide excellent modulation on alloy rims. However, discs offer better wet-weather consistency and heat management—choose calipers if low weight and simplicity are priorities and your frame supports rim brakes.
Buying Guide
When buying road caliper brakes, prioritize reach, pad type and material. Reach (39–51mm on the SRAM Force) must match your frame/fork; cartridge pads simplify maintenance and let you switch compounds for alloy or carbon rims. Aluminum construction gives a great balance of stiffness and low weight, while stainless hardware improves longevity in wet conditions. Decide between rim and disc brakes based on riding conditions: rim calipers remain great for road riding focused on low weight and simplicity, but if you frequently ride in heavy rain or tackle long, hot descents, discs may offer better heat management and consistent stopping power.
