Frequently Asked Questions
Is the bottom bracket included with the Rival1 crankset?
No. The Rival1 crankset is sold without a bottom bracket. For the GXP spindle variants, you will need a GXP-compatible bottom bracket (threaded or press-fit adapters depending on your frame). If your frame uses BB30 bearings, consider the BB30-specific Rival1 variant.
Can I use this crankset with a 2x (double) chainring setup?
The Rival1 is optimized for 1x setups and ships with an X‑Sync single chainring. While the 110 BCD allows some flexibility with chainrings, traditional 2x shifting may require compatible chainrings, spacers and a front derailleur; for reliable 2x performance we recommend selecting a crankset specifically designed for double-ring drivetrains.
Which chain speeds is this crank compatible with?
This crankset is compatible with SRAM 10- and 11-speed chains. The supplied X‑Sync ring is profiled for modern narrow/wide chain engagement to work best with 11-speed chains, but it will also work with 10-speed SRAM chains.
What bottom bracket do I need for a GXP Rival1 crank?
For GXP Rival1 variants choose a GXP bottom bracket that matches your frame shell (e.g., BSA 68/73). GXP cups are widely available; follow SRAM's installation instructions for preloading and torque settings. If your frame is BB30, pick the Rival1 BB30 variant or use the correct adapter kit.
Are other chainring sizes available?
Yes. Rival1 is offered in multiple chainring sizes including 42T and 50T depending on the variant. The 110 BCD also allows you to swap in aftermarket chainrings compatible with that BCD to tailor gearing to your riding.
What crank arm lengths are available and how do I choose?
Rival1 comes in 170mm, 172.5mm and 175mm lengths. Choose shorter arms for higher cadence and lighter riders or longer arms for leverage and taller riders. If unsure, match the crank length to your current setup or consult a bike fit professional for optimal leg extension and knee comfort.
Buying Guide
When choosing a road crankset, consider three main factors: crank arm length, chainring size, and bottom bracket compatibility. Crank lengths (170–175mm) affect leverage and knee angles—shorter arms favor cadence and clearance, while longer arms give more torque. Select a chainring that suits your terrain: mid-sized rings (40–42T) for mixed climbing and flats, larger rings (50T) for high-speed road use. Verify your frame's bottom bracket standard before ordering. The Rival1 GXP variants need a GXP-compatible BB; if your frame uses BB30, order the BB30-specific Rival1 variant or the correct adapter. Finally, decide if you want the simplicity of 1x (better chain retention and less clutter) or a 2x setup (wider gearing range)—Rival1 is optimized for 1x applications with X‑Sync chainrings.
